When the Water Came: Evacuees of Hurricane Katrina gathers the intimate recollections of 11 Louisiana and Mississippi residents and the unforgettable details of their lives during and after Hurricane Katrina. Their words, transformed by the poet's hand into witness poems are heartbreaking, but also full of irony and fortitude, and are ultimately inspiring stories of the human condition. Powerful black-and-white portraits of the participants and photographs of their surroundings create a lyrical conversation.
Cynthia Hogue is currently Professor and Maxine and Jonathan Marshall Chair in Modern and Contemporary Poetry at Arizona State University. She has published ten books, including the co-edited Innovative Women Poets: An Anthology of Contemporary Poetry and Interviews, and six collections of poetry. Among her honors are a 2009 Witter Bynner Translation Residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute, MacDowell Colony and Wurlitzer Foundation residencies, an Artist Project Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, a Fulbright-Hayes Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in poetry.
Rebecca Ross's photographs have been exhibited throughout the United States and in Europe. She has completed several public art projects in Arizona and has received recognition from the Scottsdale Cultural Council and Center in Santa Fe for her teaching and outreach work with disadvantaged youth. Her photographs are represented in public and private collections including the Museum of Fine Arts-Houston, Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, Mayo Clinic-Scottsdale, and the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, Texas. Her awards include an individual Artist Fellowship and Artist Project Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts.
