Ashleigh Bell Pedersen - The Crocodile Bride

Ashleigh Bell Pedersen will be at the Garden District Book Shop discussing her book, The Crocodile Bride!

This event is free & open to the Public!

Set during the swampy summer in 1982, this stunning debut novel follows eleven-year-old Sunshine Turner and her troubled father Billy as the secrets of their family’s past swirl around them in the one-road town of Fingertip, Louisiana. During a hot summer of June moods, grubworms, and dark storms, Sunshine discovers stones in her chest – and learns the dangers her coming-of-age will bring about in the yellow house she shares with her father.

Without the vocabulary to comprehend Billy’s actions or her own changing body, Sunshine turns to a story passed down through the generations of the Turner family: in the dark waters of the Black Bayou lives a crocodile with an insatiable appetite and a woman with a mysterious healing gift. As Sunshine’s summer unspools, she turns to the one person who will need no explanation of the family secrets she carries—the crocodile bride.

The Crocodile Bride will be available for purchase at the event in The Garden District Book Shop.

Brian Noyes: The Red Truck Bakery Farmhouse Cookbook

The Garden District Book Shop welcomes, Brian Noyes, founder of the beloved Red Truck Bakery in Marshall, Virginia, and author of the Red Truck Bakery Cookbook, will be at The Chicory House to celebrate his new cookbook, The Red Truck Bakery Farmhouse. Cookbook: Sweet and Savory Comfort Food from America's Favorite Rural Bakery. The new book presents more than 95 all-new, comforting recipes celebrating ingredients and traditions from the bakery's home on the edge of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge mountains.

The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase on-site through The Garden District Book Shop. Noyes will be available to mingle with guests and personalize books after the discussion.

The event will begin at 4:30 PM with a coffee & tea service provided by The Chicory House. Noyes will bring his Lexington Bourbon & Ginger Cake from the new cookbook, as well as the brand-new and ultimately Southern Honeysuckle & Sweet Tea Cake. He will then sit down with Hannah Hayes, former Editor of Wildsam and former Travel + Culture Editor of Southern Living, to discuss The Red Truck Bakery, his cookbooks and share stories about the writing process.

The Red Truck Bakery Farmhouse Cookbook features Noyes’ favorite savory recipes and old-time classics from family, friends, and the bakery archives. The cookbook emphasizes local, seasonal produce, and it is rife with small-town charm, inspired by the sense of country comfort found in the 170-year-old farmhouse where the bakery began.

From delightful lunch and dinner options like Potato & Pesto Flatbread, Corn Crab Cakes with Jalapeño Mayonnaise, Mid-July Tomato Pie, Pork Tenderloin with Rosemary and Blueberries, and Sweet Potato and Poblano Enchiladas, to knockout desserts like Lexington Bourbon Cake, Virginia Peanut Pie, and Caramel Cake with Pecans (which Garden & Gun magazine called the “perfect Southern dessert"), the recipes in The Red Truck Bakery Farmhouse Cookbook are what we are all craving—unfussy, homey, Southern-leaning dishes that focus on local produce but don’t shy away from decadence. And for those who are eating vegetarian or vegan, there are plenty of plant-based options, like a vegan and gluten-free Coffee Cake, Carrot & Leek Pot Pies, Mushroom-Ricotta Lasagne with Port Sauce, and the Bakery's beloved “Beetloaf” Sandwiches.True to the spirit of the Red Truck Bakery, the recipes in the Red Truck Bakery Farmhouse Cookbook deliver unfailingly delicious comfort all year round.
