2000
by Elizabeth CatlettElizabeth Catlett's work came to symbolize the emotive force of the civil rights movement. Sculptor, painter and printmaker, she chronicled the rituals engaged in, and "isms" endured by, spirited African-American women. Catlett began her 65 year career by studying with Grant Wood and befriending Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. She touched New Orleans by teaching at Dillard University and creating the statue of Louis Armstrong at the center of Armstrong Park. This elegant expression of master printmaking continues a tradition of hand crafted Congo Square posters on archival paper that sell out annually.
